Hooked on Hope Fundraiser

In September we announced a new partnership with Hooked on Hope, a fabulous local organization that provides funding and other support for breast cancer patients and their families, all throughout the Tampa Bay region. For patients who are uninsured or under-insured and going through breast cancer treatment, Hooked on Hope makes a world of difference covering copayments and living expenses. The organization has raised and distributed more than $420,000 since 2009.

Medical Partnerships

One of the things that makes Hooked on Hope so effective is the way it partners with the local medical community to find the patients who most need support. Local physicians, hospitals and lymphedema programs see these patients every day, and they can help connect them with Hooked on Hope to make sure they’re getting the support they need. As a medical supplier, we here at Helios know that having a resource to give is only half the battle; making connections with patients in need—who otherwise might not know about these resources—is a vital part of the plan.

Lymphedema Garments

In addition to financial support, Hooked on Hope provides garments for patients suffering from lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer treatment. Lymphedema causes swelling in the extremities, and specialized compressive garments help to relieve that swelling. Part of our partnership with Hooked on Hope involves providing ready-to-wear or even custom garments for lymphedema for Hooked on Hope patients in need.

Pandemic Consequences

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, Hooked on Hope has had to cancel all of its fundraisers this year, leaving the organization in dire need of support and alternative methods of fundraising. Breast cancer doesn’t go away just because there’s a pandemic, and for many people, income has been even harder to come by due to current economic circumstances.
